The Podcasts I’m Hooked On

the podcasts i am hooked on

For the longest time I’ve been a fan of listening to music while I work out, but lately I’ve switched from Team Music to Team Podcast.  I find podcasts to be fun and engaging, so much that I’ll actually exercise longer if it means getting to listen to the end of a show.  Always a good thing, right?  Here’s a roundup of my current favorite podcasts, in no particular order.

Serial – Technically the first season is over, but if you haven’t listened to this yet, give it a go.  Host Sarah Koenig tells one story over multiple weeks, the first of which is a true crime story.

StartUp – A podcast about the starting of a podcast company, giving a behind-the-scenes look at starting and running a business.  This is very well done and the same serialized type of format as Serial.

The Lively Show – Host Jess Lively is all about living with intention, and each week she interviews amazing guests to talk about where they are and how they’re living intentionally.

Elise Gets Crafty – Elise of EliseJoy.com is a maker and business owner who talks about small business, creativity, inspiration, and motivation with other creative guests.

Fresh Rag – The Show – A podcast about creative ventures that discusses everything from business to marketing and media strategy.  Host Dave Conrey interviews expert creatives about their businesses and secrets to success.

Smart Passive Income – This show is all about discovering passive income streams so you can have more time and freedom to do what you love.

I’ve also heard I should be listening to Stuff You Should Know.  Any other awesome listening suggestions?

I also am obsessed with podcasts. They have totally replaced music listening for me!

    Here are my favorites:
Oh No Ross and Carrie — Ross and Carrie test out different pseudoscience-y or cult-y or just strange things and report on it. I just started listening to this one. They try out mail order pheromones, go in a sensory deprivation tank, join the Mormon church, etc. ….All done very tongue-in-cheek. I love it.

Travel with Rick Steves — If you’re already a Rick Steves fan or just like talking about travel 🙂

The Longest Shortest Time — A parenting podcast on a bunch of topics

The Sporkful – A podcast about food, but not fancy food… more like finding the tastiest possible ways to eat regular, non-gourmet foods like cereal and sandwiches and pizza.

America’s Test Kitchen — It’s basically just the TV show in podcast form. There’s a call-in segment where they answer listener questions, product reviews, taste tests, and more stuff like that.

A Way With Words — A call-in show about the history of English, including why we use the phrases we do and where various words come from. I always learn something fascinating from this one.

Back Story with the American History Guys — I LOVE this one. If you like history, you will probably enjoy it! They usually cover a broad topic (advertising, nutritional advice, oratory, etc) and each of the hosts looks at it from the perspective of the time period in American history that they specialize in.

Sawbones — A humorous look at the different (usually bizarre and terrifying) ways we tried to cure ourselves of various ailments throughout medical history.

The Relevant Podcast– This is my all-time favorite, the first podcast I ever really got into years ago, and is the highlight of my week, really. It’s the podcast of a Christian culture magazine, but they talk about all kinds of things from weird news stories to politics/culture issues to really awesome musical guests from all genres. I feel like the cast of this podcast are all personal friends of mine by now. (I know they aren’t, but I wish they were!)

Hopefully that’s not too many suggestions! PS: Tanya, I love your blog! 🙂
