Ever since fifth grade when my friend Kaitlin beat me in my school’s Handwriting Olympics (true story), I’ve had a thing for pretty-looking words. I was a competitive kid so the bitter taste of losing was motivation for me to perfect my skills, especially since I love writing by hand. For the record, Kaitlin is the nicest person ever, so it was hard to hold a grudge. Still, I’ve practiced my handwriting for years and have always wanted to take a calligraphy class. Luckily, I recently stumbled on the beautiful blog The Stationery Place and found out a class combining two amazing things: Seattle bloggers and learning calligraphy. Sold!
The class was a ton of fun – I met a great group of girls and I fell even more in love with calligraphy. Now instead of admiring from afar, I could actually create some pretty pieces myself. For the past few weeks, I’ve been making it a nightly habit to practice my skills. For me it’s a great way to relax and the bonus is that I’ve sent out a ton of handwritten letters with beautiful addresses. It’s funny the way that learning something new can totally motivate you in other areas of your life. Learning calligraphy led to sending more mail (and more love!) and to finally organizing all my craft supplies so I could find a home for my new supplies. Let me tell you, my husband is not complaining about having a cleaner house!
I’d love to hear – have you learned any new skills lately? Have you tried calligraphy?
